Key factors for the introduction of HIPS

Domestic or residential energy consumption contributes to over twenty five percent of our nation's Co2 emissions. Home heating systems also contribute to over ninety percent of energy used in the home, so in effect keeping your house warm converts to over twenty percent of Co2 emissions and energy consumption in the United Kingdom.

Goal one of Home information pack, the Home Energy Certificate, is to give potential buyers a first class report on the actual energy consumption of a property. This can let them make an informed choice of whether or not they will buy the property due to energy consumption. It is probably paving the way for Energy consumption regulations that will be coming into force, which could relate to taxes due on a property because of Co2 emissions.

Goal two, the Home Condition Report is to give a more detailed survey of the actual property.

Long term, the prime objective is to help slow down the actual amount of energy used by homes and home owners in the UK and ultimately across Europe and also cut down on the amount of bad or poisonous to the environment emissions. Hopefully this will have a good effect on slowing down the contributing factors to global warming, and also make fuels supplies last longer.

Hopefully, as more EU member states enforce the directive, it will be good for the environment.

There are simple but effective changes you can do in your everyday to help combat climate change:

  • Check that your heating system thermostat isn't set too high (21 degrees C in the living room is suggested), and use the timer or programmer so you only heat your home when necessary
  • Make sure your hot water isn't too hot. Your cylinder thermostat shouldn't need to be set higher than 60 degrees C/140 degrees F
  • Turn off lights when they aren't needed, and don't leave appliances on standby.

Remember not to leave chargers (e.g. for mobile phones) turned on when you aren't using them.
